Rantberg: "N. Korea 'Runs Naval Suicide Squads'"

Rantberg is an excellent source of information on both the War on Terror, and on the Korean Peninsula.
N. Korea 'Runs Naval Suicide Squads': "Former North Korean soldiers who defected to South Korea on Monday claimed "underwater suicide squads" may have been responsible for the mysterious sinking of a South Korean naval vessel on Friday.
Why aren't I surprised?  Oh, yeah, I spent two thirds of my so-called adult life dedicated to ensuring that the Two Kims' minions would have the maximum opportunity to prove that their dedication was, in fact, "to the death..."
According to one high-ranking North Korean defector, the North formed suicide attack squads in each branch of the military after the country's leader Kim Jong-il said during the U.S.-led invasion of Iraq in 2003 that no military in the world can defeat an army that can carry out suicide bombings.
Which only proves that he forgot that his own invasion of South Korea in 1950 only really picked up steam after the ROKs ran out of troops ran out of guys with the guts (or whatever) to attempt to take out T34 tanks with bundles of dynamite.  (Our fault.  US Army doctrine said Korea was not "tank country", so we gave the ROKs a few AT mines, but no AT weapons...)
The suicide attack squads are known as the "invincibles" in the Air Force, "bombs" in the Army and "human torpedoes" in the Navy. North Korea is said to place special emphasis on the naval squads. It operates a brigade of suicide attack squads in its East Sea and West Sea fleets and they are considered key to overcoming North Korea's inferior conventional military power.
I guess when you're going up against F22 Raptors in MiG17s, you need all the encouragement you can get.  Oh, yes, in your entire career as a north Korean fighter pilot you don't log as many flight hours as a US Fighter pilot logs in a month...

Overall, phrases like "human bombs" and "Human torpedoes" are commonplace in Korean commie ideology.  Frankly, unless one or more of these defectors was a high-level ossifer--unstated--I have to wonder how much truth there is to these claims.

Anyway, onward.

One defector who served in North Korea's intelligence service, said, "Following the first naval battle in 1999, North Korea realized that it cannot defeat the South Korean Navy by conventional means and began studying unconventional methods."
At the time of that little scuffle--over crab fisheries in the Yellow Sea, AKA The West Sea*--I was in the tail end of my Army career, and flying (well, crewing) Electronic Warfare helicopters; we were alerted to fly support for the ROKs  in this action.  Cool!

Ooops, none of us were certified to fly "over water", which I argued, unsuccessfully, was not strictly necessary.  By the time we had the training and certification set up--not usually necessary for Army helicopter crews--the shootin' was over.
---
*West Sea=Yellow Sea.  Do NOT ever refer to the "Sea of Japan" when speaking to a Korean.  While historically, the name "Korean Sea" was used first, most Koreans today prefer "East Sea."

Thank You!

To the unknown lady who let me have the last spot in the Park and Ride.   We both came around the corner at the same time, and she waved me in.

I don't know if you could tell I was running late, but I really appreciated it.  I hope you weren't late due to your charity.  I hope you found a spot.  I hope I would have the grace to cede the last spot to someone else, at least if I wasn't running late...

(There's an extension Park and Ride lot, as it were, across the street, that there's usually space in, but it is far enough away I probably would have missed the train and been late...)

Setting the hook

Random Nuclear Strikes:  Setting the hook:
They’ve stuffed another entitlement program fishhook down the people’s throats and now they are out attempting to make us all believe it won’t cause us to bleed.

Pelosi instructions to Democrats leaving for recess: It’s time to go on offense

Speaker Nancy Pelosi wants House Democrats to go on offense during the critical two-week recess that begins this weekend.

Members returning to their districts should tout the new healthcare law’s benefits to their constituents, according to the “recess packet” issued by Pelosi’s (D-Calif.) office this week and obtained by The Hill.

Meanwhile, the Democrat’s allies are in a full court press to do the deed for them

PBS National Discussion and Debate Series: Healthcare

Overview: A variety of lessons and activities are provided to help students gain the knowledge and background necessary to engage in a meaningful debate about the following resolution: Health care is a fundamental right; the government has an obligation to secure this right for all Americans. Teachers may opt to complete all the assignments in preparation for the debate, or select those most necessary or interesting to the class.

Yes, those initials stand for the Public Broadcasting Service. I’ve also sent them a version of this post asking if they’ll be running a discussion for that topic as well.

Here in Washington State, our Attorney General, Rob McKenna, was one of the first AG’s to sign up with Florida to fight the new law in the courts. Local leftists have opened up a brand new dot-org to fight his actions.

No Reversing Our Benefits Political Action Committee

It has only been a week and they’re already feeling entitled to “benefits” from the new law.

They’re like children in the toy store check out line. The toy hasn’t even been purchased yet, but it is already “theirs”. And in a week, it won’t be enough, and they’ll want more.

I want to strongly encourage every Washingtonian to call or write AG McKenna and thank him for fighting this in our name.

The contact page is here.

I got the info from more than one local leftosphere site, so you know they’re contacting him and bitching about him fighting against their new entitlement.

Do it today. Do it tomorrow. Do it the next day.

Give the phone number out to your friends and neighbors and encourage them to do the same.

Powerline: Lame punditry from the president

Lame punditry from the president:
President Obama has offered his analysis of the Tea Party movement. According to Obama, the movement is a 'loose amalgam' whose 'core' consists of 'folks who just weren't sure whether I was born in the United States, whether I was a socialist.' Around that core, the president acknowledges, is a 'broader circle of people, who are legitimately concerned about the deficit, who are legitimately concerned that the federal government may be taking on too much.'
I think whether he was born in America is irrelevant at this point, but I have no doubt whatsoever on the question of whether he is a socialist...

And any socialist libtard progressive apparatchik who persists in the illusion that the Tea Party Movement is controlled by a small core of people, well, we know they're delusional anyway, they're socialists...

About the only time Powerline is not worth reading is when they are rabbiting on about British soccer leagues. ;-) GRTWT.

OK, so the title is more than a little obvious. His is better:
We Must Defeat the Entrenchocrats of Incumbistan...Anything Else Is Just Gridlock:
November of 2010 is shaping up to be the most massive restoration project that liberty-loving citizens of this country have undertaken in our history. We have let our liberty leak away for decades at the hands of mediocrities and run-of-the-mill politicians of both parties, and from 2006 through 2008 we handed the full reins of our government to outright socialists (of course they don't call themselves that, but that is what they are) and the result has been galloping government spending that will bankrupt the nation, the full usurpation of whole sectors of the economy, the trampling of private property rights and the rule of law, and the weakening of our defenses. All of this will ensure America's decline and a lower standard of living for our children, if it is not reversed. Decline is not inevitable, it is a choice, and we have chosen it. We must now choose to go back, to repudiate our recent choices.

Sir Lawrence himself highlighted an encouraging development in this regard. By all accounts, Republicans stand a good chance of making gains and even taking one or both houses of Congress in November. That is, well, OK news as far as it goes. What is decidedly better news is the type of Republicans that could very well lead this retaking of the government. Sir Lawrence pointed out last night in a great segment that many of the Republican candidates that are competing in November are not career politicians - they are drawn from outside of government, from the military, from the business world. This is precisely what the Republican Party needs, more regular people, more people coming out of private life to supplant the careerist bozos that have destroyed the Reaganite base. (N.B. It is actually happening on both sides, but only ever so faintly on the Dem side) We've needed this type of insurgency for years, but rather than over-turning the establishment, this insurgency will link up with insurgents on the inside and augment positive changes already taking place within the establishment. The right guys (and gals) are becoming the new faces of the party - Pence, Coburn, Ryan, Bachmann, DeMint. I have long lamented on this blog that the Republican Party leadership consists of the wrong type of Republicans. Just a few short years ago Tom Coburn and Paul Ryan were considered troublemakers within the party establishment and kept on the back benches. Today, those two fellows are the leading faces of the Republicans in their respective chambers. These guys need principled allies. So, fielding the right team is critical.
(Emphasis added.) Go RTWT.

I do not, have never, considered myself a Republican, for all that I usually wind up voting for the GOP candidate. I confess to being heartened by the CV's of the GOP candidates I posted about yesterday, few of whom are career politicians.

Recycle Congress in 2010!

Saw that on a sign in a photograph from a tea party in St. Louis.

Washington Patriot Hub has some info about who's running for which congressional seat in Washington state this autumn.  They've been vetting the candidates, but have not posted the results; they intend to post all results for all candidates at the same time.  Seems fair.

Candidates for US Senate:
All are Republicans except for the incumbent, Patty Murray.
UPDATE:  In what some describe as "The shoe finally dropping", Dino Rossi has declared for US Senate.
Art Coday has dropped out of the Senate race, declared for Rossi, and declared that he will run for State Representative in the 32d Legislative District.

House Races
District 1:
District 2
  • John Koster (R)
  • Rick Larsen (D, Incumbent)  Larsen is about the only Democratic politician I know who, when confronted by a massive "Tea Party" turnout for a town hall meeting, responded by securing a large enough venue to accommodate the whole crowd.  He made an effort to give everyone present a chance to be heard, and to answer the questions honestly.  He still voted for Obamacare, but he gets points for listening, and not being intimidated.
District 3 (Incumbent Brian Baird has announced his "retirement.")
 District 4
District 5
  • Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R)  Incumbent.  Apparently running unopposed, so far.  You may have seen her, she gave the Republican response to some drivel His imperial Majesty spewed...
District 6
  • Norm Dicks (D)  Incumbent, also apparently running unopposed.  I look forward to reporting, and supporting, any opposition he may have.
District 7
  • "Baghdad Jim" McDermott.  (D), Incumbent, running unopposed because they can't find anyone in Seattle who can spell "GOP."
District 8
  • Suzan Delbene (D)  Suzan with a zee...
  • Dave Reichert (R) Incumbent, former King County Sheriff, of "Green River Killer" fame.  A+ on gun issues, very popular, but is still catching flak for supporting Crap and Tax...
District 9
  • Dick Muri (R)
  • James Postma (R)
  • Adam Smith (D) Incumbent.  Rated a B on gun issues by NRA.  Helped me get the Army to unscrew my retirement pay, which they had all jacked up.  But has voted for every socialist scheme that the Obama/Pelosi/Reid Axis of Evil has vomited forth.
There may be other candidates; if so, I will update this as I learn of them.  I'll try to cover state races in another post.

The Dean of Women at Moosylvania U

I've found that the surest way to reduce a couple of my cow-orkers into gibbering mounds of misogynistic libtard protoplasm is to say anything at all that could be interpreted as remotely favorable about Sarah Palin.

Norman Podhoretz has an interesting piece in today's Wall Street Journal on the topic:
Nothing annoys certain of my fellow conservative intellectuals more than when I remind them, as on occasion I mischievously do, that the derogatory things they say about Sarah Palin are uncannily similar to what many of their forebears once said about Ronald Reagan.
Really, the whole piece is so good, I'd post it all, but I don't know the WSJ's attitude to obscure bloggers' use of their stuff, so go read the whole thing, but...
What I am trying to say is not that Sarah Palin would necessarily make a great president but that the criteria by which she is being judged by her conservative critics—never mind the deranged hatred she inspires on the left—tell us next to nothing about the kind of president she would make.
Take, for example, foreign policy. True, she seems to know very little about international affairs, but expertise in this area is no guarantee of wise leadership. After all, her rival for the vice presidency, who in some sense knows a great deal, was wrong on almost every major issue that arose in the 30 years he spent in the Senate.
What she does know—and in this respect, she does resemble Reagan—is that the United States has been a force for good in the world, which is more than Barack Obama, whose IQ is no doubt higher than hers, has yet to learn. Jimmy Carter also has a high IQ, which did not prevent him from becoming one of the worst presidents in American history, and so does Bill Clinton, which did not prevent him from befouling the presidential nest.
Since it's become obvious that His Imperial Majesty Barack Hussein Obama knows nothing of foreign policy, or of domestic or economic policy either, the whole "I can see Russia from my house!" canard is made even more absurd--aside from the absurdity of people wanting to be taken seriously when their main criticisms of a political personage are based on lines from political satires.  (Assuming, of course, that it's still satire if it's not funny.)

Myself, I feel that much of the Conservative nomenklatura's distrust of Sarah Palin arises from the same source as it's fear and distrust of the Tea Party Movement:  Better to allow the Democrats to remain in charge, these hacks feel, than to risk losing control of Conservatism altogether.  For Sarah Palin represents the hopes and ideals of the Common Man, and while the elite may feel that he is all too "common", in the sense of rude and crude, he also represents the real America--as they most assuredly do not.

That Explains It!

By a continuing process of inflation, government can confiscate, secretly and unobserved, an important part of the wealth of their citizens.

New favorite bumper snicker

I generally subscribe to the view that the driver's IQ is inversely proportional to the number of bumper stickers on the car. But fellow Gun Blogger Rendezvous IV Survivor The Wandering Minstrel presents a new one I like:

Heros, Villains, ???

So, after the vote to nationalsocialize American health care, I posted a list of "Democratic Heroes", Democrats in Congress who voted "no."  This list included a Congresscritter from Tennessee named Davis.  The other day, my father pointed out to me that Representative Davis is rather notorious for being a "benchwarmer" who will do whatever the Speaker desires of him.  I recalled that there were reports that we could expect some democrats, if and when a vote was assured, to be "allowed" to vote "no", so as to be able to assure their constituents that they had done whatever they could to prevent this abortion (so to speak) from passing.  We had seen such shenanigans before.

So, come November, remember that a "no" vote on ObamaCare is not a guarantee that your congresscritter's heart is in the right place; that goes for pachyderms as well as jackasses.

Whoever you are that Googled Bill Foster and wound up here, I hope your boss wasn't too butt hurt to discover that I have labeled him a "villain" for his vote...  Or, actually, I hope he was upset, and reconsiders his ways after the good people of Illinois' 4th Congressional District boot him this fall.  Granted that, being from Illinois, the Fix may be In, he should still reconsider.  Mostly I hope you told him and he doesn't take it out on you.

    Tax Day Tea Party 04/15/2010

Was just checking out the Washington Patriot Hub website, a new operation to me.  Looks like sort of a clearing house, if you will, for Tea Party-type organizations.  They list several Tax Day Tea Party events:
    THE MAIN EVENT

Olympia-based groups & Seattle groups have decided to combine and host a Tax Day "Tea for Two" Party.
The first half is scheduled for Olympia from 12 pm - 3 pm, on the North Capitol Steps. Then people are encouraged to form a caravan to Seattle for 2nd half from 5:30.
The participating groups are EFF, Seattle Sons & Daughters of Liberty, Pierce County Tea Party, South Sound Tea Party, & Tea Party Patriots and the Sons Of Liberty Riders.
The Sons Of Liberty Riders will perform the opening flag ceremony and will lead the caravan from Olympia to Westlake Mall in downtown Seattle for the 5:30 rally there.

Speakers Include Idaho Governor BUTCH OTTER and Washington Representative Shelly Short.
    Information: http://www.theteapartyofspokane.org/dselle
Hmmm, the governor of Idaho is speaking at a Washington Tea party...

Will have to see what Mrs. Drang and I can work out.  My have to take a day off, but then I could do both Olympia and Seattle, and Mrs. Drang could join me downtown after she gets off of work.

Note to self:  Price pitchforks at Lowes, Home Depot, Ace...

    Baucus or Bacchus?

From Breitbart's Big America: Better Late Than Never: Top Senate Dem Admits Un-American Health Bill Was to Address “Mal-Distribution of Income”: "

Now Max Baucus tells us: the health care overhaul America was just forced to endure was the government’s attempt to fix the “mal-distribution of income.” It’s an admission that sadly comes after the bill has passed and been signed by President Obama. But it’s better late than never.
    According to FoxNews.com, Baucus said:
“Too often, much of late, the last couple three years, the mal-distribution of income in American is gone up way too much, the wealthy are getting way, way too wealthy and the middle income class is left behind,” he said. “Wages have not kept up with increased income of the highest income in America. This legislation will have the effect of addressing that mal-distribution of income in America.”
LOL, whut? As Are we Lumberjacks points, out, Baucus has been accused of Orating Under The Influence before, and this does little to convince folks that he would never do such a thing.

Big America's Kyle Olson goes on:
Excuse me Senator, but who the hell are you to decide who is “too wealthy?” Given this claptrap, you’d be a perfect candidate for a Fidel Castro or Hugo Chavez administration – after all, Castro did just call ObamaCare a “miracle.” Or would Castro and Chavez fit right into the leadership in Washington, DC these days?
Regardless, all doubts that the Democrats’ takeover of health care was little more than a power grab in the name of “social justice” have been confirmed. And it should be all the more reason to push for a repeal of this fundamentally un-American takeover.

WA AG McKenna in the news

Lotsa coverage of Washington State Attorney General Rob McKenna.  There was a rally in support of his decision to take part in the 14 state (and growing?) lawsuit challenging ObamaCare.   Articles on that in the Tacoma News-Tribune (here and here), the Olympian, (h/t Sound Politics) Thurston Pundits, and Seattle Times.

On Friday there was an anti-McKenna, pro-ObamaCare rally, which mustered dozens of people.  Maybe a couple of hundred.  The official m(Washington State Patrol) estimate of Saturday's headcount was 850; some estimates had attendance as high as two to four thousand.

In response to Governor Christine Gregoire's rant ("I don't know who he represents, he doesn't represent me!") AG McKenna is reported to have announced that he is representing the people of Washington State.

It is  o surprise to learn that the conservative Sound Politics blog supports the lawsuit.  (MCKENNA AND THE PEOPLE V. THE DEMOCRATS AND HEALTH CARE DEFORM.)

It is astonishing to find that the usually left-wing Seattle Times agrees:

We think McKenna has a good case, and one the progressives who condemn him ought to appreciate. These critics are so often right about the dangers of corporate power, and particularly the rapacity of insurance companies.
But if it's federal power, and it's for a social purpose, and Barack Obama is presiding over it, they set their judgment aside. They accept a 2,000-page bill on its label only. They accept its promise, almost surely vacant, of cost savings. They overlook the deals cut with the insurance and pharmaceutical interests. They shrug off the "cornhusker kickback." And to those who invoke the Constitution, they become shrill.
This page supported Obama, and we still like him. But we also support checks and balances on federal power, and review of this law by the Supreme Court.

    That is, Salma vs Friedrich.

"Practicing for a time we hope never comes"

Lotsa folks do that.  I spent 20 years doing it in the Army.  In this case, it's Amateur Radio Operators in Bothell, a suburb of Seattle.

Haven't seen a demographic study, the Seattle-Tacoma metropolitan area seems to have a very high per capita number of ham radio types.

But we still have to drive to Portland to visit a store...  (Yes, I know there's this "internet" thing, So what?)

    Definition of the Day, 03/28/2010

So, there I was, trying to craft a really deep, profound, post on the nature of "human rights" and how to define what is, and is not, a human right.

    Still struggling with it.

So I go to Google Reader and start reading... reading... Gun Blogger IV participant's blogs... reading... What's Chuck up to...?

Damn it, he summed it up better than I could.
A great litmus test is this:  Does this right have to be provided by someone or something?
If the answer is yes, then it isn't a right.
OK, so a "litmus test" is not a definition, but still.

Judge Andrew Napolitano, via Cap'n Bob & The Damsel:
Medicare - broke. Social Security - broke. Medicaid - broke. Amtrak - broke. The U.S.Post Office - broke. Who in their right mind would give healthcare, with that track record, to the same people who have broken everything they’ve tried to manage?
The answer, of course, in no, in their right mind.  But, those in their left mind?   Their far left mind?  Their liberal/progressive, socialist, communitarian mind?

Oh, yeah, they love them some nationalization and collectivization.

    Orygun CHL

So, Sheriff Glenn Palmer of Grant County, Oregon, was at today's Fun Show processing applications for Oregon Concealed Handgun Licenses.

Now, Oregon is Shall Issue for residents, but may issue for non-residents, and they only if they live in an adjacent state.  So, if you want to defend yourself in the Beaver State and you're not from there, or from Washington, Idaho, Nevada, or California, forget it.

Furthermore, most counties in the state will not issue unless you're from a state adjacent to them--meaning that "inland" counties are a no go--and at least one "border" county will only issue to residents of counties adjacent to them.

Then, as Phil details here, Sheriff Palmer decided that he would take his show on the road and visit gun shows in "adjacent" states, and process applications there.  First was California, next was Washington.

Figuring that this would be a popular idea, Mrs. Drang and I dragged ourselves out of the house at an uncharacteristically early hour.   The line to get into the show was fairly long, (as they have been for every show since, about, oh, say, when some obscure Illinois Senator won the Democratic nomination for President.)  Being members of the Washington Arms Collectors in good standing, we did not have to stand in line, although since we both had bags we did have to make a stop at the security table, where I got to show off my 5.11 Discreet Carry sling bag.

Expecting a very ling line for the application process, we walked right by the table where Sheriff Palmer was set up, right inside the door.

Including reviewing the paperwork, taking photos, and being fingerprinted, I estimate the process took maybe half an hour.

Somewhere in the process, Sheriff Palmer, or one of his assistants, mentioned that they intend to be back for the next WAC show, which will be April 24-25.

    WHAT YOU NEED:
The form.  (Some say "don't fill it out in advance"; we did, and had no problems, but I had extra blank copies, just in case.)
    ID:  Two, one with photo.
Photocopy of the photo ID.  (We didn't do that, but the WAC members desk was making copies.)
Proof of Handgun Safety Training.  For example:
    • NRA Basic Pistol.  While we were there, Sheriff Palmer confirmed that instructor qualification would serve; a government official with common sense, I dunno about that...
    • Military or Law Enforcement Qualification.
    • Utah CHL Class paperwork, or equivalent.
    • State of Maryland Online Firearm Safety Course. This is nominally a 30 minute class on gun safety; I described it to Mrs. Drang as Gun Safety for Dummies, a digest of the NRA Home Firearm Safety Class.  Sheriff Palmer will accept the certificate of completion as proof of training.
They do NOT need a photocopy of your current WA (CA, ID, NV) CPL, but the application paperwork does ask for the number, and for the name and telephone number of the agency that granted it.

Questions?  Grant County, OR, Sheriff's Office Contact Info.

Meanwhile, Sheriff Palmer is using the old fashioned ink and roller system to take prints; he is taking a collection to purchase a portable inkless (digital) fingerprint system.
Oregon Sheriff Palmer wants to issue you an OR state CCW Permit in CA!
Oregon Sheriff Palmer wants to issue you a non-resident CCW permit in Oregon, and he is going to come to CA to do it.  He needs your help, and CGN has stepped up in partnership with GUNPAL to make it happen. Palmer needs $12,000 to purchase a Portable LiveScan machine so he can show up at local CA gunshows and take your applications.   The law requires that this be done in person.
I have spoken with Palmer and he is one of the most pro-RKBA men I have ever met in law enforcement or indeed anywhere.
Please dig deep, and contribute whatever you can.  Donations to this project are NOT tax-deductible, will be routed through the County’s books, and any money in excess of the cost of the machine will be used on travel expenses.
    Please donate via GUNPAL
    Checks can be sent to:
    Glenn County Sheriff’s Department
    205 South Humbolt Street
    Canyon City, Or. 97820
with a note for “fingerprint machine”
    -Ben Cannon
    Director, Calguns, Inc.
(From Calguns.net, via Phil @ RNS and Derek the Packing Rat.)

There was a donation/tip jar on the table; I threw in a sawbuck.

And a shoutout to Liberty News, who sat behind us at the Utah CHL class, and was in line behind us today.  Once is accident, twice is coincidence...

    Support WA AG McKenna!

    from Washington Patriot Hub:

3/27/2010 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM  Rally to Support AG McKenna & Individual Sovereignty
The permit was approved this morning and we need your help getting the word out for our plans to peacefully assemble and show support for our Attorney General as he stands up and works to protect our sovereign rights. The Attorney General is under incredible political pressure and he is doing the right thing (along with 13 other states) challenging the individual mandate.

    Location:  Capitol Steps in Olympia
(right next to and in full view of the Justice Center).

Date / Time:  Saturday, March 27th, 2010 from 11:00 AM to Noon.

Bring your Constitutions and your flags and hear from Attorney General Rob McKenna yourself what will be required to stand against that which threatens our liberty. Samual Adams is traveling from Boston Massachusetts to join us on this important day. He is known as the champion of both individual liberty and state sovereignty. He will share the founders intent when drafting the US Constitution and share why recent events have given him a heavy heart. On an upbeat, rumors are forming that we may start the rally off with live music and finish with a skit from TeaPartyCharlie.

So, does this mean they're mainstream now?

    The Beeb on Preppers.

    I LOL'd:
Preppers are keen not to be seen as survivalists - the stereotypically anti-government, wood-dwelling, gun-toting hermits of past decades.
They say that like it's a bad thing...

Stranger, when you call me that, smile:
While most preppers tend to be politically to the right, or even libertarian in their views, their back-to-basics approach to food cultivation and preparation, as well as use of alternative energy sources, paradoxically means they have much in common with left-of-centre environmentalists.
     S*i*g*h.  Here we go again:
Many preppers cite the American government's bungled response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 as a key motivator behind their approach to survival.
One more time:  The Federal Government's response was not "bungled", it simple can not legally move in until the governor of a state declares a disaster and requests federal assistance.  But, the media hated (hates) George W. Bush and gave the publicity to the loathesome mayor of New Orleans and incompetent governor of Louisiana, who did nothing to prepare, including request that FEMA roll the convoys of aid that were queued up at the state border waiting for the word.  Which took far too long to come, but that was not the fault of President Bush or Michael Brown.  (Who wouldn't have been my first choice to head FEMA, but that's beside the point.)

    Musta been an inside job...

Amongst all the PSH regarding allegations of violence, or threats of same, levied against congresscritters from both sides of the aisle in the aftermath of the, ahem, contentious nationalsocialization of health care, the Seattle Slimes reports that, among other things, a brick was thrown through the Cleveland office window of Ohio demonrat Steve Driehaus.

    The thirtieth floor office window.

The story was first posted at 9:40 PM on the 24th, was "modified" about 12 hours later, and has not been touched since.

    This is cool

    From Rantburg:
1st Sikh in decades graduates US Army officer school: "The soldiers in standard-issue fatigues and combat boots stood side-by-side repeating their creed: "I am an American soldier. I am a warrior and a member of a team. I serve the people of the United States and live the Army values ..."
Capt. Tejdeep Singh Rattan was no different except that he wore a full beard and black turban, the first Sikh in a generation allowed to complete U.S. Army basic officer training without sacrificing the articles of his faith. He completed the nine-week training Monday after Army officials made an exemption to a policy that has effectively prevented Sikhs from enlisting since 1984.
"I'm feeling very humbled. I'm a soldier," said the 31-year-old dentist, smiling after the ceremony at Fort Sam Houston. "This has been my dream."
Go read the whole thing.  Barring members of a warrior religion never made much sense to me, unless it was simply impossible to accommodate them vis a vis equipment, duties, etc--and the article makes clear that Captain Rattan is able to wear a Kevlar helmet and a standard issue protective ("gas") mask.

    And, to no one's surprise...

Per Wired: Lawmakers Eyeing National ID Card: "Lawmakers are proposing a national identification card, a 'fraud-proof' Social Security card required for lawful employment in the United States. The proposal comes as the Department of Homeland Security is moving toward nationalizing driver licenses."  (Emphasis added.)

I blogged about this before, of course.

    Constitutionality of Obamacare

A discussion at the Washington Post, by Georgetown U Constitutional Law Prof Randy Barnett.

    It Ain't Necessarily Quite Over...

As The Washington Examiner points out:
    Democrats to America: Drop dead

Well, they finally did it. Despite more than a year of steadily rising public opposition, manifested in opinion polls and in protest rallies across the country, President Obama, Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi finally rammed through Obamacare late Sunday when House Democrats gave the bill their imprimatur.

The House vote isn’t the end of the national debate on this issue, however, as the Senate still must accept the House changes in the Senate Obamacare bill. Senate Republicans argue that the House reconciliation bill that makes significant changes in the Senate bill violates the Congressional Budget Act of 1974, maintaining that it should be ruled out of order by the Senate parliamentarian for consideration in the upper chamber. That in turn would mean the only bill the president could legally sign would be the original Senate bill, with its massive funding of abortion and the infamous deals used to buy senators’ votes, including the Cornhusker Kickback. At that point, a constitutional crisis of historic magnitude seems inevitable.

Here’s why: Never before in American history has a measure of such importance been imposed on the country by the majority party over the unanimous opposition of the minority. Democrats have continually sought to create a halo effect for Obamacare by associating it with Social Security and Medicare. But the reality is that both of those landmark programs were approved with strong bipartisan support in both the Senate and House. The Senate vote on Social Security in 1935 was 77-6, with 64 Democrats being joined by 14 Republicans. In the House, the 373 votes for Social Security included 77 Republicans. When Medicare passed in 1965, the 68-21 Senate vote included 13 Republicans, while 65 Republicans were among the 313 affirmative House votes. Such bipartisan consensus was what the Founders sought with the Constitution. But Democrats made a mockery of bipartisanship by shoving Obamacare down the throats of Republican lawmakers and snubbing the popular majority that opposed it. The Democrats have undercut the credibility of the law they created.

A fast-track challenge to Obamacare’s constitutionality will likely reach the Supreme Court in coming months. The justices will have multiple issues to consider, including the unprecedented federal mandate that all individuals buy approved health insurance, the undeniable inequity of the many corrupt bargains used to buy votes for the measure, and the banana republic parliamentary tactics used by the Democratic congressional leadership. Whatever the high court’s decision, it won’t be nearly as unpleasant as the verdict many Democrats will hear from their constituents in November.
Gee, wouldn't it suck to be one of the Socialist Sell-outs, infuriate your entire constituency, inspire people across the country to donate money to your challenger, only to have the cause for which you sold your soul fail?

When you've lost Michael Moore... (EDIT)

So, it should come as no surprise that I regard Michael Moore as a fellow Michigander somewhere in the same league as, say, SOCIALIST SELL-OUT BART STUPAK, George Armstrong Custer and Timothy McVeigh.

So, when Michael Moore starts whinging about how Obamacare will do more harm than good, it makes me giggle.

Historically, the claim of consensus has been the first refuge of scoundrels; it is a way to avoid debate by claiming that the matter is already settled.

    Today's The Day

Email from Tea Party Patriots. I'll be at work, but...

    This Ends Today

Congress plans to vote on the Government Takeover of Health Care today at 2PM eastern. It's up to us to stop it, again, and make sure it's dead once and for all.

If you're anywhere near DC, get in your car and get to the Capitol right away.

If you cannot make it to DC, start hitting news websites and blogs immediately. Most news websites give you the ability to leave comments at the bottom of their stories. Reporters often use this to gauge public sentiment and reflect it in their news stories. Congress pays attention to the news and it affects their votes.

Spend the afternoon commenting on as many health care related stories as you can. Hit national news websites, local news sites, political blogs, and any other public venue you can find.

We must leave no stone unturned.

    Woe is us

    Woe are us?*

    How about, "Alas, Washington State"?

It's not enough those socialists on the Least Coast are spending (!) this weekend conspiring to kill American Health Care as we know it, and the economy to boot, but here in the evergreen State we also have the added pleasure of having our own home-grown socialists trying to figure out how to screw ever sou out of us.
So, first, we Washingtonians have to work out who's going to Olympia and who's going to "The Other Washington", and then we have to pass the hat to raise tar-and-feather money twice.

Life just ain't fair, I tell ya'...
    ***
    * Maybe "Woe are we".  I expect Roberta will be along shortly to straighten out the grammar.

    Unpossible.

100,000 gather on two days notice to protest Obamacare in DC?

Can't be happening, it's not in the Lame Stream Media...

BTW, Michelle Malkin has a detailed list of bribes and payoffs in the bill, including which congresscritters benefit...

    WA-1 Congressional Candidate James Watkins

Spoke to his wife, Ashley, at the Gun Show last weekend. Here is the email she sent me:
    Hi –

Thanks for stopping by the James Watkins for Congress booth at the WAC show in Monroe this weekend!

There are so many reasons we need to defeat Jay Inslee this November – protecting our gun rights is only one of them. We’d like to see the entire Constitution and Bill of Rights protected.& Please go to James’ web site at http://WatkinsForCongress.com to see where James stands on the other issues that are important to you.

I’m confident you’ll have a lot in agreement with him.

We need your vote in November.

Until then, please share James’ website and Facebook page (James Watkins Congress) with as many people as you can.

And, as I mentioned at the show, even if you’re not in the 1st Congressional District, Jay Inslee and his democratic cronies can still affect your gun rights, health care options, and so much more – they all need to go.

I know times are tough, but campaigns are judged not only on the amount of money raised, but on the number of donations. So if you can only make a small donation – it still says “Hey – we support James!” – and it will appreciated. If you’re able to do a larger contribution, that would be great too.

If you’d like to help the campaign further – we’re having a volunteer party on St. Patrick’s Day. Details and RSVP info are on the website.

Thank you again for stopping on Saturday to pick-up some information about James!

    Best wishes,
    Ashley Watkins
I'm not sure Jay Inslee is the worst congresscritter  from Washington; after all, what with Patty "Soccer mom" Murray, "Baghdad Jim" McDermott, and Norm Dickshead,  the competition is pretty stiff.

But we would be well rid of him.

    Seriously?

What I find breathtakingly stupid about government sometimes is it's tone-deafness.  For example, we have the "Obama's Gonna Ban Fishing!" thing going around, which I commented on brought up here.

I only "brought it up" because it seemed to me that even His Imperial Majesty Barack Hussein Obama I was not stupid enough to employ people who would let the concerns stand without commenting, explaining, maybe adding one or two members of the sports/recreation fishing community to the board...

    Apparently not.

Instead, they leave it up to their pet "journalists" to simply make fun of the knuckle-dragging redneck Tea Partiers who worry about such silly things.

This will not end well--for them.

Recommended Reading: "The Constitutional Case Against Progressives"

"Josie Wales" has an impressive item up at Andrew Breitbart's Big Government entitled
    The Constitutional Case Against Progressives:
[Do not read this article without a copy of the Constitution, and if you do not have one handy, shame on you (link here).]

A line is being drawn in the sand between the statists and Americans, and I use the term American in the grandest sense. The United States of America represents one of the last bastions of traditional liberalism, which is why the Left should no longer be identified as liberal, but rather we should continue to identify its members as progressive statists. The Left believes the precepts of our Constitution have failed society, and thus, we must look towards the “enlightened democracies” of socialized Europe for guidance in the progression of American society.

    Picture 3

We hear the mantra of rights professed daily by the progressives: education, work, social security, health care, etc. And since we do not live in a state of nature, the guarantor of those rights must be the government. This is the definition of a statist, and adherence to these beliefs is inherently in opposition to the Constitution. The Founders recognized that government could NEVER be the guarantor of rights which is why so much of the Constitution is written in terms of limiting powers conferred upon the government.
I've had this sitting in my queue as a draft for a while, debating how to handle it.  Finally decided it's too long for here, so you should Go Read The Whole Thing.

WA Gun News: GOAL Post 2010-11 & more!

First off, Joe Waldron reports that Washington and Florida have agreed to recognize each other's Concealed Pistol Licenses.
When in Rome, you must follow Rome's rules regarding carry. The good news is that both states' concealed handgun laws are very similar.

Perhaps the most important thing is that in both states licensed carry is legal in establishments that serve alcohol, BUT PROHIBITED IN THE BAR PORTION. If an establishment derives more than 50% of its income from the sale of food, licensed carry is legal. But again, no carry is allowed in the bar portion of such restaurants, in both states.

Washington DOES allow carry in the non-secure areas of airports.
Washington DOES NOT allow unlicensed carry of a loaded handgun in a motor vehicle. You MUST have a license recognized by the state of Washington to carry loaded in a vehicle (loaded referring to the handgun, NOT the driver!).

Also in Washington, a "concealed pistol license" is JUST THAT -- it only covers handguns, NOT long guns or other weapons.

And Florida recognizes ONLY those licenses carried by a resident of the state that issues the license.

    Washington reciprocity web site:
    http://licgweb.doacs.state.fl.us/news/concealed_carry.html

That "Banned in the bar"thing is sometimes a pain--how often do you go out to dinner and there are no seats in the restaurants, but there is in the bar?--but I have learned to live with it.

Next, "Myth busting" regarding the current "special session" of the state Legislature in Olympia, and other info:
    GOAL Post 2010-11
Legislative Update from Olympia 19 March 2010

    SPECIAL SESSION CONVENED 15 MARCH

    GUN BILL RUMOR UNTRUE

THE OTHER SEATTLE GUN BAN LAWSUI

The legislature reconvened at noon on Monday to conduct a special session to resolve budget difference between the House and Senate. At this time, the legislature is still in session, and the budget impasse has NOT been resolved.

At the end of every legislative session, bills that did not pass are retained in their status at the end of the session. When a special session is called, bills are technically reintroduced, in their last status. A rumor has started that the proposed "assault weapon" bill, SB 6396, was reintroduced and is running for the special session. Not true. ALL bills that died at the end of the regular session were technically "reintroduced," but no action is anticipated on any gun bill, good or bad.

Shortly after the Second Amendment Foundation, the NRA and several local residents filed a challenge to the City of Seattle handgun ban, based on grounds it violated the state's preemption law (RCW 9.41.290, the state reserves to itself the right to regulate firearms), Kent resident Robert Warden filed a similar challenge in federal court, claiming the Seattle gun ban violated his Second Amendment rights.

On Friday, 12 March, federal district Judge Marsha Pechman found the Seattle ban did NOT violate the Second Amendment. Not surprising. Judicial precedent in the 9th Circuit holds that the Second Amendment does NOT affirm an individual right to arms, and as a general rule, judges are bound by court precedent. Thus Judge Pechman was simply applying standing 9th Circuit decisions. That will likely change in June when the Supreme Court incorporates the Second Amendment to the states.

In the meantime, Judge Pechman's ruling is irrelevant, because King County Superior Court Judge Catherine Shaffer HAS ruled the ban to be a violation of state preemption. Seattle's gun ban signs remain as an example of elected official arrogance and fiscal folly. The folly, of course, comes at taxpayer expense, despite the fact that the state's Attorney General, Rob McKenna, warned Mayor Nickels that the ban was in violation of state law. But some elected officials, like Nickels and his replacement, Mike McGinn, consider themselves above the law.

    "Not Yours To GIve"

Courtesy Instapundit and The Junto Society, and apropos the passing of Fess Parker, Colonel Crockett's insufficiently famous "Not Yours To Give" speech in Congress.

Which I am about to email to my so-called representatives.

    On This Day In History...

Breitbart's Big Government reminds us that bad legislation is not necessarily forever, by pointing out that on this day in 1766 The Stamp Act was repealed.

    RIP, Davy and Dan'l

The New York Times reports that Fess Parker has died.

Just the other night we watched "THEM" on cable;  had forgotten that Fess played the part of the Texan pilot who first reported the "ant-shaped flying saucers."

After he stopped acting, he made a pretty good living making wine.  In fact, it was a Fess Parker Vigonier that got Mrs. Dang and I into wine in a big way.   We visited the winery, staying at Fess Parker's Wine Country Inn, a few years back.

We have lost an American Icon, and he will be missed.

Our thoughts go out to his family.

    Exactly!
