About damned time

Periodically throughout my Army career some Commanding General, or wannabe CG, would issue orders that would restrict, or appear to restrict, the Right to Bear Arms of personnel under their command. Typically this would take the form of requiring that all personnel turn in an inventory of all firearms they owned, even if said guns never came within ten (or a hundred!) miles of any military installation. (Apparently, all personnel immediately, and informally, transferred ownership to their spouses, parents, or children.)
One Battalion Commander I had requested ordered a roster of all personnel assigned who had concealed carry permits. (Apparently none did...)
Arma Borealis points out language in the National Defense Authorization bill that should stop this nonsense.

Those were the only orders I ever disobeyed. Even when I lived on base, I stored my firearms in my home without anyone (aside from my shooting buddies) knowing. I also refused to "register" my weapons with anyone. I was not going to leave my 2nd Amendment rights at the front gate, period.

I was never happy with registering mine when I lived in the barracks, but wasn't always able to find someone I trusted enough to stash them with him.

Yeah I have to say that we are not too happy with having to pay to keep a hunting rifle at the armory, since we live on base. Also I wonder about the Major Hasan attack. Maybe if our own military members weren't disarmed, someone could've responded even faster than the MPs . . .
