What's the French word for "elevator"?

'Cuz, in defiance of their thing about "The wit of the staircase"--you know, you think of what you should have said when you're on the stairway, leaving--yesterday, still on The Big Boat, I got on the elevator and two guys were discussing the Newton School Shooting; one was quoting Wayne Lapierre, whom I ass-you-me he had seen on the ship's Fox News Feed, regarding arming teachers.  The other guy seemed dubious, and I butted in:
A shepherd who cannot defend his flock is useless.
In retrospect, I would make that "cannot or will not", and maybe "worse than", but it might be more effective shorter.

Links to go with the thought:
In conclusion, it cannot be said often enough: Gun Control is not about guns, it's about control.
