Happy Birthday

Man In Black.

I feel like I ought to say something more, but... what? What could I possibly say about Johnny Cash? I mean, even to call him an American Icon is to diminish him, somehow.

His last video:

Watched Walk The Line a few weeks ago. Was never a fan of River Phoenix, and the movie didn't change my mind, but I was impressed by the research that Phoenix obviously did, learning to sing and play guitar with Mr. Cash's signature mannerisms, the way he held the guitar and sort of sidled up to the mike.

But RP and Reese Witherspoon, as fine a pair of performances as they tuned in, just didn't, IMHO, have the same chemistry as June Carter Cash and Johnny.

I knew, of course, that June Carter Cash was a member of what I heard referred to as The First Family of Country, but I never really understood just how much the Carter family influenced American music. I love this recording of JRC and his Mother-in-law, Mother Maybelle.

"Play it like this , son."
"I cain't never get it goin' like that."

One thing I learned from the Wikipedia article above that I never heard mentioned--and we usually talked about these things--was that SSgt Cash was a Russian SIGINT geek in the Air Force!

John R. Cash, American.
