Word Of The Day: Baizuo

The Word Of the Day is: Baizuo (from Urban Dictionary.)
Baizuo (pronounced "bye-tswaw) is a Chinese epithet meaning naive western educated person who advocates for peace and equality only to satisfy their own feeling of moral superiority. A baizuo only cares about topics such as immigration, minorities, LGBT and the environment while being obsessed with political correctness to the extent that they import backwards Islamic values for the sake of multiculturalism.

The Chinese see the baizuo as ignorant and arrogant westerners who pity the rest of the world and think they are saviours.
Justin Trudeau's worldview is a low-resolution caricature of an adult's worldview.

Baizuo at Wikipedia.
Baizuo (Chinese: 白左, literally "White left(ies)"[1]) is a derogatory Chinese epithet that came into being in the middle 2010's.[2][3] The word received attention in Germany where it was seen as criticizing the immigration policies of Angela Merkel.[4][5][6]

Context and usage

The word baizuo is, according to political scientist Zhang Chenchen, a Chinese word that ridicules Western "Liberal elites".[7] The term has also been used to refer to perceived double standards of the Western media, such as the alleged bias on reporting about Islamist attacks in Xinjiang.[8][9][10]
Zhang Chenchen further defined the word "baizuo" with the definition "People who only care about topics such as immigration, minorities, LGBT and the environment" and “have no sense of real problems in the real world”; they are hypocritical humanitarians who advocate for peace and equality only to “satisfy their own feeling of moral superiority”; they are “obsessed with political correctness” to the extent that they “tolerate backwards Islamic values for the sake of multiculturalism”; they believe in the welfare state that “benefits only the idle and the free riders”; they are the “ignorant and arrogant westerners” who “pity the rest of the world and think they are saviours”.[11]
Baizuo is used as an insult amongst Chinese netizens.

QOTD, Blast From The Past Edition

Going back through old posts and saw that, on Tuesday, March 9, 2010, Tamara won the Internetz again with this:
The problem is that the .gov acts like there was strong encryption on the Constitution and they don't have the right key to read it.
Really, it's been her Internetz all along and she just lets us use it, too.

Who thought that anyway?

Lately I've been perusing items on the website of Foreign Policy magazine. Sure, there's a lot of furriners and commies there, but think of it as my version of Tamara watching the Sunday morning talk shows. Living on the Left Coast as I do, especially now when I get home from work after midnight, pressure testing my cardio-vascular system watching the talking heads pontificate is i practical, to say the least.

So when I saw an article called Foreign Policy: Obama Was Not a Realist President, subtitled "If he had been, he might have avoided some of his biggest foreign-policy mistakes", my first thought was "No shit, Sherlock."

Realist? Abandoning Iraq, ditto Afghanistan, sucking up to Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood and Putin, bowing to royalty all over the place, insulting long-standing allies and friends to play footsie with enemies...

Who the hell could think Obama is a realist, foreign policy or otherwise?

Well, it turns out paragraph four givs us a clue: The kind of guy who can write about Obama in these terms:
But first, what will Obama’s legacy likely be? My view, for what it’s worth, is that future historians will rate Obama highly. He will be remembered for being America’s first nonwhite president, of course, and for conducting his office with dignity, grace, and diligence. His administration was blissfully scandal-free, and he didn’t make a lot of hasty decisions that turned out badly. He was admirably thick-skinned and charitable toward most of his critics, despite the abuse and thinly veiled racism he faced from some of them. And no matter who wins in November, he is likely to look mighty good by comparison.
"Dignity, grace, and diligence"? It is to laugh! (And of course, the item is replete with cheap shots at Republicans in Congress...)

Thought For The Day, 03/03/2016

If you're unfamiliar with the term, read up on it here: Know Nothing - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Native American Party, renamed in 1855 as the American Party, and commonly known as the Know Nothing movement, was an American political party that operated on a national basis during the mid-1850s.
The movement arose in response to an influx of migrants, and promised to "purify" American politics by limiting or ending the influence of Irish Catholics and other immigrants, thus reflecting nativist and anti-Catholic sentiment. It was empowered by popular fears that the country was being overwhelmed by German and Irish Catholic immigrants, whom they saw as hostile to republican values, and as being controlled by the Pope in Rome. Mainly active from 1854 to 1856, the movement strove to curb immigration and naturalization, but met with little success.
And as Abraham Lincoln is my witness, I wrote that before I read this: Will this year be an 1860 moment? No such luck | Power Line

Towards A Taxonomy of Some Types of the Gun Culture

I've been thinking, or maybe over-thinking, about this for a while as you might suspect...
And I may or may not have displayed some of these behaviors at one time or another...

Towards A Taxonomy of Some Types of the Gun Culture
Fudd: Primary interest is in killing things (animate or inanimate) for sport, preferably using a gun made of blued steel and wood. Little interest in politics, beyond the politics of his/her preferred game animal.

Gun Store Commando: Often also encountered at gun shows, rarely seen at the range. Has no compunctions about sharing information, which is frequently inaccurate, and usually based on what he read somewhere or something someone he knows or knew claimed happened far, far away. Unless it is merely opinion or prejudice, ditto what he read somewhere, etc., etc.
Fond of "sound bites" like "They all fall to hardball", "God made man, Sam Colt made men equal", "Any caliber will do as long as it starts with a '4'", "ARs shit where they eat", etc.
Refuses to allow himself to be confused by the facts, i.e., just try and convince him that a snub-nosed J Frame-sized .38 Special is a less than ideal firearm for anyone new to pistols, especially the elderly, infirm, or small in stature.

Tactical Timmy: Obsessed with military equipment, nomenclature, terminology, and procedures. Has full sets of camouflage uniforms and load bearing and other gear "as used by xxxx!", where "xxxx" represents the "Flavor Of The Day" in elite military units. Must have latest and greatest gear ascribed to said "FOTD" unit, regardless of whether said gear is actually being used or not.
Obsessed with technical details of weapons and equipment he will never own, or have a practical use for if he owned it.

Unlike the Gun Store Commando, the Tactical Timmy will actually spend time at the range, but due to his insistence on owning all the latest and greatest will likely accomplish little, since he has too much "kit" with him.

Cletus: (Thanks to Tamara Keel for her ground-breaking work on identifying this specimen.)
Owns a gun. Spends as little as possible on ancillary equipment and supplies, like ammunition or holsters. If seen at a range, is apparently more interested in making noise than in safety, precision of shots, or in learning effective gun handling skills.
Like the Gun Store Commando, his decisions are based on myth, lore, and received wisdom. (Or "wisdom"...)
Also like the Gun Store Commando, is regrettably not shy about sharing his "knowledge."
Notes on the Cletii:
  1. Feminine form: Lurleen
  2. The plural form, "Cletii" is often mis-used by those of less than rigorous dedication to accuracy as interchangeable with the singular form, "Cletus".
  3. "Cletus" is a generic name, and also tends to describe a sub-genre; other acceptable forms may take forms such as "T-Bone", "J-Dawg", "Boracho", etc.
  4. There is some dispute as to whether the Cletii are really part of the gun culture, but if you spend enough time at gun shops, shows and ranges, you are sure to encounter them.

So, back in Formerly Great Britain, some adherent of the Religion of Peace went all Sudden Jihad Syndrome and cut someone's throat in the Tube.

The Emperor's Speech

So, I looked at the transcript of His Imperial Majesty, Barack Hussein Obama's speech.

For anyone else who couldn't be bothered to tune in his blather -- unless they were waiting to see if he was going to pull a Heidi on Sunday Night Football -- I herewith provide the TL;DR version:
  1. We shall continue our current, highly successful strategy in the war on terror.
  2. The No Fly List we all hated 10 years ago for it's secretive nature and lack of due process would be just dandy if we added "can't lawfully own a gun" to "can't take a commercial flight."
  3. If Congress doesn't act to restrict the right of law-abiding Americans to own certain guns we think are icky then they're a bunch of poopy-heads.

As a show of solidarity...

...with our Mid-western friends, we here in Pugetopolis are bracing for a bit of Global Warning ourselves:
Special Statement
Statement as of 12:46 PM PST on November 22, 2015
... Snow showers are possible in The Lowlands Tuesday and it will
become windy and cold around Bellingham and in the San Juans...

A cold front will move through western Washington Monday afternoon
and evening. A cold upper level low pressure system will shift
over the region Monday night and Tuesday. This will cause the snow
level to drop to around 500 feet across western Washington late
Monday night and Tuesday morning.

Colder air will move down from British Columbia Tuesday morning.
This will further drop the snow level down to sea level in the
north part of western Washington. It will be windy across western
Whatcom County and in the San Juans with cold Fraser outflow.

Stay tuned to the latest forecasts at www.Weather.Gov or your
favorite news source.

Granted, compared to what folks back home anticipate on an annual basis, our cold snaps and snowy weather is pretty pathetic, but after the last year or two, I anticipate a great deal of angst over even just a few flakes.

So to speak.

And To Think That I Saw It On Mulberry Street...

Except, of course, that an exhaustive, 5 minute Internet search leaves me convinced that there is no "Mulberry Street" within thousands of miles of me.

Anyway, earlier this afternoon I was passed by a pick up truck in the livery of a new (to me) local (I assume) business called "Mercenary Exterminating."

Do they specialize in ridding one of unwanted infestations of Condottiere?

Or are they only in it for the money?

And, if the latter, need one be concerned that they will keep missing that one nest or hive of vermin, and one must keep calling them back?

Or worse, (to take it back to the first question), will Machiavelli be right, and the rats or termites come up with the scratch to outbid you, and now the Mercenary Exterminators are coming after you...?

In other (specialty geeky) news, locally there seems to be a Greyhawk Construction Company. No word on whether they have special rates for dungeon work. Maybe Mercenary Exterminating sub-contracts to them for the wiping out of dungeon running groups...?

Speaking of "specialty geek" business names, I may have mentioned elsewhere that Seattle has a plumbing outfit known as Scharnhorst-Gneisenau Plumbing. I'm sure there's a pun in there somewhere, but I'm at a loss.  All at sea, as it were.
