An Improvement

Back in 2011, in The Clue Meter: QOTD, Army Birthday Edition, I noted that the Army was doing away with the Green Service Dress uniform altogether and simply using the Dress Blues as the Service as well as Dress uniform.

Other than that, at gthe time my only comment was "No Comment."

Over the ensuing years, however, I have come to think that was a real mistake, almost as bad as letting everyone wear a black beret. Since I somehow made it through a 20 year career without feeling compelled to purchase a set of Dress Blues -- I had two occasions in all that time where it would have been the preferred uniform, and one of those was a formal dinner with Mrs. Drang's employer! -- it took me a few years if seeing soldiers wearing them out and about to realize just how goofy they looked as a service, rather than dress, uniform.

So Sergeant Major of the Army Daniel Dailey  has announced that the Army is going back...

...to Pinks and Greens!

Well, sort of. For one thing, "pinks and greens" were worn by officers only, these will be the same for all ranks.

That last photo was taken at the AUSA convention in October; the first two at the Army-Navy Game in December. (GO ARMY! BEAT NAVY! Which they did... for once.)

You will note that by December they had added a belt to the tunic. Much sharper.

I also note that the SMA is rockin' a 50 Mission Crush on his cap, something else that was strictly an officer "thing", and an aviator-only thing, at that.

Earworm, 11/11 Edition

This popped up on the satellite radio "40's" station on the way home from work:

One thing that impressed me was that it was correctly labeled "The Duckworth Chant."

Here's a period recording of the Duckworth Chant, recorded at the post where Private Duckworth made it up; it included a lengthy intro.

(The Wikipedia article about the Duckworth Chant quotes that page; it has more info on cadences in general, though.)

I am impressed that the brass seem to have been OK to references to Jody from the start...

My favorite renditions:

At one time I had quite the rep for knowing all the good Jodys.
Here's some more info: Cadences

Looky what I made!

Go ahead and share it on your Facespace, your blog, your Twitter, etc. Attribution would be nice.

He's like Fred Rogers' Evil Twin. Maybe we can get a restraining order to keep him inside New York City limits. He wants your guns, you sugary drinks, your extra large drinks, your salt, your loud music...

Go Army, Beat Navy!

Gangnam Style!
I think this still gets filed under "WTF?", though...

Seen on Ranger Up's Facespace page, where they made reference to the Naval Academy making a version.  From the sounds of it, West Point's version beat Annapolis' version like, well, like Mitt beat His Imperial Majesty last night...

QOTD, 03/07/2012

Seen in comments to a Motivator on Facespace:
One does not simply overwatch into Mordor.
If you don't get it, well, never mind...

The Talmud
"Never expose yourself unnecessarily to danger; a miracle may not save you...and if it does, it will be deducted from your share of luck or merit."
 From "Motivational Quotes."

Wow.  Just... wow.  I have this strange image involving Talmudic Scholars serving in Zahal...

Internal soundtrack

I don't know how I let this one slide.  Good thing I stumbled on Tam's response.

So, anyway, Phil @ Random Nuclear Strikes asks the musical question:
You’re about to get eaten by the zombie hordes. You’ve prepared, but there are more than you every possibly imagined. Sorry.
As you load your last mag into your chosen weapon, what song comes up your MP3 player/IPOD?
Ignoring the fact that I have no MP3 player/Ipod--technically, the Droid can serve, but I have yet to drain the battery that way--the normal soundtrack for my "Bandits* in the wire" fantasys tends to include Golden Earring's "Twilight Zone" and The Ted's "Stranglehold."

However.

Zombies, people...

Too obvious?

*I came of age in the 70s.  All my Drill Sergeants were 'Nam vets, as were most of the senior NCOs and Field Grade officers I served under for about the first half of my Army career.  I had to re-write that phrase a dozen times to try and make it slightly PC...

Heh

From Blackfive.
For no reason in particular, and for what it's worth, I feel compelled to point out that the three "dark green Marines" visible in that "Motivator" seem to be as dubious, on average, as their lighter-complected colleagues.

*yawn*

Weird  night.  Kept waking up from dreams, the only part of which I remember is that they all seemed to involve R. Lee Ermey.
Woke up at 0500 to the Princess waking me up in her own inimitable manner to tell me it was time for cuddles--her inimitable manner consisting of standing on your chest or shoulder and repeatedly poking you in the face with a paw of needle-like claws--but I had the idea for this motivational poster firmly in my head at that point...

Motivation

Posted this in the 1911 forum at AR15.com, thought I'd share it here:
They have a "1911 Motivational Poster' thread going.

Imagine my embarrassment when I posted that and realized the guy who had made the poster directly above mine had used nearly the same line, although he used a fancy-schmancy Les Baer 1911 and his caption ran something like "Care enough to shoot the very best."

I like mine better.
