Concealed Carry in Utah (Corrected, Again)

NOTE:  Update/corrections in bold and underlined. Made the first corrections myself, then Shawn caught a another errors, and made an update or two.

Utah has an interesting set up for Concealed Carry:  You have to take a class to get their permit, it is otherwise shall-issue.  The class has to be conducted by a Utah-Certified instructor, but, once the instructor is certified, he or she can conduct the training pretty much anywhere.

So, it develops that a Utah-certified instructor here in the Puget Sound region is arranging to conduct UT-Concealed Firearm Permit (CFP) classes at some of the local Wholesale Sports stores.  (Formerly known as Sportsmans World.)

A UT-CFP is valid in 29 states: AL, AK, AR, DE, GA, ID, IN, KY, LA, MN, MS, MO, MT, NE, NM, NC, ND, OH, OK, PA, SD, TN, TX, UT, VT, VA, WY & WA.  Of course, if you live in WA, you have a WA permit--right?  (I am wondering why Michigan is not on that list, as the last I heard Michigan was in full compliance with the 10th Amendment, and offered "full faith and credence" to any other states' concealed carry license; possibly it's because you have to be a resident of the state that issued the permit for Michigan to recognize it.  In other words, Michigan does not recognize "third party non-resident" permits.)

The instructor, Shawn, tells me that he has arranged to conduct the training at the Federal Way location on December 20th and January 16th, and the Lacey location on December January 24th(I know what you're thinking, "What a great Christmas present!")   He is also trying to make arrangements for a class in the Silverdale store on December 19th, so if you are, or know anyone who is, out that way, have them call the store and ask about the class*...  There may also be one or more There will also be a class at the Burlington location on January 17th.

Course material is mandated by the State of Utah , and includes:
  • Handgun Safety Rules.
  • Where & Where Not To Carry Concealed.
  • How To Handle Encounters With Police.
  • Proper Use Of Force.
  • Firearm, Ammunition & Holster Selection.
  • Fundamentals Of Shooting.
  • Federal, Utah State & Local (Utah) Laws.
Price of the course is $150.00; after completion you will need to send the Utah Bureau of Criminal Identification the signed, stamped form you will receive, plus a passport photo, a set of fingerprints, and $62.50, to complete the process. You have up to a year after completing the training to do this, so you can take the class and wait a payday or three to send off for your prize.

No, it isn't cheap.  The instructor has to get trained, certified, bonded, etc.; and, having the legal right to carry in 29 other states can bring great peace of mind.

Too bad there is no easy alternative to being legally disarmed in California, and Oregon doesn't make it easier for Washingtonians to get a permit...

Sigh, California. Can we join the Union too?
