And, yeah, fiber arts (and technology) have been key in advances in human technology.

The traditional description, the cocoon dropping into the princess' teacup, etc., is plausible enough. It's going from "Yuck! Hey, that's interesting..." and doing something with the event, including industrializing (sort of) cultivation of silkworms, that's impressive.
