UPDATE: The BBC has picked up the story about Mr. Muller's promotional offer of a $250.00 gift certificate for either gas or a gun.
They get it wrong, of course, implying that he is just throwing a pistol into the deal, rather than "just" $250.00 towards whatever boomstick you want.
They quote him as recommending the Kel-Tek P3AT for self-defense, but the photo accompanying the article is of a Star FR .22LR target pistol.
The hat tips for this one are quite convoluted, including James at Hell in a Handbasket, Say Uncle, and Roberta X, who actually owns two of the things.
To the best of my knowledge I have never met a Star Model F or FR in person, but the Stars are nice pistols, well made, imported from Spain. They made the original compact (or compacter, compared to the Colt Commanders) .45, the PD, still sought enthusiastically by shooters today. The Firestars also generally sell almost as fast as they show up in a gun store.
Stars are not real common, as Star went under in the mid-1980s. I was told long ago that the Spanish Government tried some sort of socialist consolidation of the Spanish firearms industry, but according to the Wikipedia article, it was plain old-fashioned money trouble. ("The 1990s were bad for defense companies all over the world." Really?)
Anyway. Surprisingly enough, the Beeb's article is pretty straightforward--especially considering the persiflage (is that the right word?)* in the NYSlimes piece.
*Maybe not: "Persiflage – a light, quizzing mockery, or scoffing, specially on serious subjects, out of a cool, callous contempt for them." Contempt for Mid-Westerners and gun-owners, yes. Callous, maybe. Cool? And there is certainly mockery, but "light and quizzing?" I think not.
