Well, actually not all that random, considering it features two posts by the same guy.
John Scalzi brings us John Scalzi's Guide to the Most Epic FAILs in Star Wars Design andJohn Scalzi's Guide to Epic SciFi Design FAILs - Star Trek Edition.
Star Wars probably had worse design from an engineering standpoint, but Star trek had some pretty bad stuff. Of course, Trek also suffers from multiple-writers syndrome, which could only get worse as the franchise was stretched over several decades and incarnations.
Meanwhile, over at Wired magazine's Geek Dad we have Great Geek Debates: Stormtrooper vs. Redshirt. Which of these two epic fails at SF warriordom would win a fight? (Come to think of it, it is probably more accurate to say "Which would be the second place loser?") The guy in the crummy armor that offers no protection, impedes the wearers vision, and can't hit the broad side of a barn from the inside, or the guy who goes on an away team, and inevitably trips and dies from the stubbed toe?
I have to go with "Red Shirt Guy" actually losing the least on this, as at least he will hit the other guy on the way down, and may hold off dying until the Stormtrooper is obliterated.
