When I read ee cumings at UC Santa Cruz it was remarkably free from "self-congratulating liberal, meticulously thinking only approved thoughts" stuff - but maybe I was simply un-selfconscious. We did not discuss "The Enormous Room" however...
I remember somethign he wrote I liked a lot, that leap about with language and words most strenuously and athletically, “when man determined to destroy himself he picked the was of shall and finding only why smashed it into because.”

Thinking back on it, for years I've lumped them into the same category as other writers of "classic American literature", i.e., those tedious guys they made me read when I wold have been quite happy to spend time with RAH, et al.
Cummings' i sing of Olaf glad and big sure reads like something a progressive wrote. At first.
