GOAL Post 2012-9

Legislative Update from Olympia 2 March 2012

SENATE BILL 6628 FILED

ACTION ON SB 6628 UNLIKELY -- THIS SESSION

SIX DAYS REMAIN IN SESSION

As reported in the GOAL Alert earlier this week, Senate Judiciary Committee chair Adam Kline (D-37) filed Senate Bill 6628 that would amend the existing reckless endangerment statute to add the specific offense of leaving a loaded firearm where a child might access it with appropriate supervision.  Also thrown in was a $2 fee increase for a concealed pistol license.  The bill was a knee-jerk response to the school shooting in Bremerton last week.

SB 6628 was filed too late in the session for normal action in the legislature.  Hence the CPL fee hike -- bills with fiscal impact may waive the established cut-off dates.

The bill has not moved at all.  At this time no Judiciary Committee hearings are scheduled and the bill is unlikely to receive any direct action on the Senate floor.  Which is not to say that we can take our packs off.  We'll keep an eye on this one right up until adjournment next Thursday night.

Without doubt a bill similar to SB 6628 will be filed in the next session in January 2013.  Previous bills with similar content have not passed the legislature.  Let's work together to ensure this one meets the same end!

Six days remain in the 2012 regular legislative session.  The legislature MUST ADJOURN no later than midnight, Thursday, 8 March, ending the constitutional 60-day session.  As the saying goes, it ain't over 'til the fat lady sings.  Her final appearance will be Thursday evening.

I'll publish at least one more issue of the GOAL Post at the end of next week or shortly afterwards summarizing what went on during the 2012 session.  That will be the last GOAL Post for the year, unless a special session is called by the Governor.  Also during the year I'll be publishing any alerts as may be necessary, and during the election cycle I will publish the GOAL endorsement list of candidates for federal, statewide and legislative office.
