I did not know that

One of the roses in the backyard gave up the ghost over the winter. Mrs. Drang decided to replace it...
...with garlic.
Apparently, garlic in close proximity will chase critters away from roses.
Here are some pics of a couple of the survivors:

It's called companion planting; one plant masks the scent of the other from bugs or repels them outright. Another combination is horse radish and potatoes to keep the potato bugs away. Apparently marigolds are the ultimate natural bug repellent.

I'd actually heard of the concept -- the marigold thing specifically -- it was just the "garlic/roses" combination I wasn't aware of.
