Note: By a curious quirk of chemistry, 20th- and 21st-century MREs with a 10-year shelf-life at 285 Kelvin stop going bad after about seventy years, and very, very slowly start getting better...It gets better from there. Really. If you ever had to eat MREs, especially the early versions, it's short, but funny.
