(WXYZ) - Federal officials say they are working to confirm what is being called a "specific and credible" threat of a terrorist attack in time for the 10th anniversary of 9/11.
ABC News is reporting that the possible plot is connected to al Qaeda and may be targeted at either New York or Washington DC. The network is reporting that the information on the plot is "very specific."
The NYPD, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and the FBI have called a 9:30 p.m. news conference to address the situation.
ABC says law enforcement sources are telling their reporters that at least three people entered the US by air in August with "the intent" to launch a vehicle based bomb attack. They are believed to have come to the US from Afghanistan or Pakistan through a route that took them through at least one other country.
ABC says they may have come through Iran and that one of the individuals may be a US citizen. It is also possible that two individuals have US documentation. However, it is not clear if that means green cards or passports.
Earlier reports said officials had also been notified to be on the lookout for two GMC rental trucks missing from the Kansas City area. It appears now as if those trucks have been recovered and are not connected to the plot.
