Apparently, because the situation wasn't already fucked up enough, the LAPD responded by ventilating one or two pickup trucks that nominally resembled his wheels, putting a couple of innocent papergirls in the hospital.
Since the aforementioned screed including lots of comments in favor of gun control, 'cuz us peasants can't be trusted with guns, unlike Only Ones like him, and also lots and lots of gushing adolescent-girl-writing-to-the-teen-idol-of-the-week prose praising Obama and Biden and Hillary and MSNBC and CNN--singling Piers Morgan out for extra wet kisses--the media have decided that we're NOT to politicize this event AT ALL. Because it would be wrong to point out just how many holes this shoots, so to speak, in their efforts to save us from ourselves, or anyway from our guns.

UPDATE: So, it was pointed out by Bear in comments that the web site the following came from -- the source of the alleged "Quote of the Decade" -- is a satire/parody site, and that no congressthing's spokespersons were actually runnning around making fatuous statements like this.Except that this is a pretty good summation of the philosophy that law-abiding citizens don't need the means to defend themselves, because the Only Ones are out there to do it for us...

Feinstein and Boxer Ask Californians to Lay Down Their Weapons During Statewide Manhunt : palookavillepost.comThe quote is the last sentence here:
Throughout the day, Senators Feinstein and Boxer made desperate pleas for their California constituents to turn in their guns and not confront the crazed gunman because this would be a perfect test of their anti-gun proposals.Wow. I think I just lost a couple dozen IQ points reading that.
“The Senators feel the best course of action is to remove all weapons from law enforcement and private citizens so no one else gets hurt,” said a Senate communications intern. “When the gunman realizes that nobody else is armed, he will lay down his weapons and turn himself in…. that’s just human nature.”

Ah, maybe I've missed something here. But you did understand that Palookaville Post thingie was satire, right?
(If not, take a look at their "About" page, then google "Terry Malloy". You might also note the article by Ace Cub Reporter Jimmy Olsentwins, "Drone Manufacturers Will Offer Nuclear Powered Aircraft Directly to the Public". If I missed your sarcasm, I apologize.)
Final line from the Palookaville Post Feinstein/Boxer piece: "Putting down their weapons is simply not an option for all legal gun owners. It is their Constitutional right and moral responsibility to protect their loved ones…. it should be obvious."
Granted, writing a parody of a couple of California nutcases who are pretty much indistinguishable from an Onion alternate reality is tough.
Don't feel all alone. Just to cover my posterior, I did a web search on the phrase; wanted to be sure the satirist hadn't lifted it from a real article. Didn't find that, but I sure found it reposted in a heckuvalotta forums and blogs by other people who thought it was real (and even more comments from others ditto).
