He probably does think he can have it both ways

Reading the WaPo's account of His Imperial Majesty Barack Hussein Obama talking down to the University of Michigan, I could not help but wonder if I am the only one who thinks that encouraging "Michigan grads to pursue diversity of thought" contradicts the criticism of "Republicans and 'tea party' followers who question his politics and his priorities."

Obama called for tolerance and the pursuit of diversity of thought in a "poisonous political climate" and criticized people at both ends of the political spectrum for "throwing around" words such as "socialist," "fascist" and "Soviet-style takeover."

Aside from the fact that we know that he is not bothered by heated rhetoric from his own side--as long as it is not aimed at him--you really cannot laud "diversity of thought" and slam folks who practice it.
